I love this mantra: Attention must be paid. It is so applicable to so many aspects of life and love. That art exercise does sound fascinating. I love getting close to paintings and seeing the brush strokes, not just the whole painting from a distance. It makes me wonder about the act of painting, imagining the artist layering thick slabs of paint or, in the case of Chuck Close, fingerprints or pixels. I wish we had more fall colors down here. My family and friends in the northeast have been sharing their photos of brilliant red and gold-leafed trees and I’m envious. As for the election, I will be voting for Harris and Walz, never any doubt about that. We generally keep a low political profile here in FL, but I’m happy to say I’m seeing more Harris/Walz signs than the other around town. I think a lot of voters are tired of the relentless drama, the ginning up of hate and violence. A Harris win won’t end that (people who engage in hate and violence will never go completely away), but it will make us and our democracy stronger. Okay, I’m stepping down from my soapbox 😉

I've been wearing my Harris/Walz t-shirt to physical therapy. It often gets a double take from some of my fellow patients here in South Carolina. Early voting just opened here yesterday, and I'll be going to vote after my PT session his afternoon.

What a beautiful post! It almost read like a poem. Good to know you’re recovering. Thank you for the movie and reading suggestions. That sock is an eye candy. ♥️

It's autumn and also a glorious full moon. Yes, attention must be paid.

My attention is being paid to almost finishing a Lavinia cable vest that I started this summer. I learned a tremendous amount from the pattern (the charts were very difficult to use). I am glad I tried the vest and now am ready to move on to another project (easier and a Christmas present). Attention will be paid.

This "mantra" will certainly make it to my journal writing tonight. Thank you. I SO look forward to your writings each week. Thank you

Oh, Lavinia looks like a great vest for the cooler weather to come! What a shame the charts were challenging, but hooray for sticking with it and treating it as a learning experience!

Yes, they were. My friend had to use her copier to enlarge them 4 times!!!! It WAS a great learning experience and I am going to love the vest :-) Thank you for your encouragement.

I know you are a reader who enjoys series. I just found the first book Iron Lake by Wm Kent Kruger in the Cork O'Connell series. Very good character development AND conflicts from three areas! I hope I can find the second books an on at my library audio shop - good ones to listen to while sewing or knitting.

Happy Autumn :-)

Thank you for the recommendation! I found Iron Lake vi my Hoopla app, and have added it to my list. Unfortunately, Hoopla has a 6-books-per-month limit, and I've already hit that number (how is this possible? it's only the 18th?) So I'll look forward to enjoying Iron Lake in November!

I wonder if I may ask a couple of questions about Hoopla. I just looked them up. Are they a fee or free offering? I see they also have online streaming of TV and movies? Thanks for the pointers.

I get free access to both Hoopla and Libby with my library card. I don't know if they have a paid option. Hoopla tends to have older books, and their borrowing period is longer (21 days). They also have ebooks, which is great if you like reading on a Kindle or a tablet. I haven't used them for streaming video, but it looks like it is available.

Libby has more new-release books and ebooks. Their borrowing period is 14 days.

To find out if your public library offers these services, call or go to the library and ask the staff at the front desk.

Sandi, still LOVE those socks! Yes, I have one too many things to pay attention to just now. The yard needs me. The garage needs me. my housekeeping needs me. And I need to come up with a birthday present for my uncle who will be 100 in November! He still writes letters and remembers the oldest daughter of his brother! So I better come up with something good!

I too will be voting for Kamala. I find her mentally strong and steady in her desire to guide the people of our country to work together. Thanks to the Biden/Harris administration our economy, both locally here in the Pac. NW and nationally is remarkably strong. And we will need that strong economy as we endure what climate change and international situations dish out. I like that Kamala is willing to understand situations before making decisions and that she knows many heads of state first hand. I like that she can stay focused while remaining open.

May I suggest instead of starting your list with the stuff that needs you, you start the list with what YOU need! The yard and garage and housekeeping don't actually need you - they will still be there and in much the same shape tomorrow or next week. For just one day, spend most of your attention on what YOU need to take care of yourself or to enrich your life.

I wish - this is a busy time in the yarn business, and I have looming tech editing deadlines! So, I suppose the answer is YES if meeting my deadlines and paying my bills qualifies as taking care of myself :-)

This is true for me, too. In spite of my never ending To Do list, I feel lucky to live where I do, and support myself with something I still enjoy doing. Yesterday while raking the leaves, I got to ‘Pay Attention’ to a young doe and her new born twin fawn. So the answer is YES for me, too.

Attention must be paid - I absolutely love that and I feel that I'm going to have that phrase on a loop now as well. I'm trying to be more aware of where my time and attention goes and be less likely to give in to demands to things that drain my energy.

I can only imagine how fraught and difficult it must be to be in the midst of all the election turmoil and noise right now - my husband is in the states for business and he said how on edge everyone is. Will be keeping all my fingers crossed that sanity prevails and Harris wins.

Ok, I am going to be a negative voice here. If you choose to refund my subscription so be it. I will not vote for Harris and I wish you hadn’t posted this in your missive. But is your Substack. I see a puppet, who was not chosen by the people of this country. I see a person who would happily restrict your voice, my voice as well as those who disagree or have alternative facts and experiences. I see word salad all.the.time.i see inflation, housing costs through the roof, crime ticking upwards, kids not learning and small businesses closing.

While I am no big time supporter of Trump I will vote for him. Not because he is great, honest, or has a tons of achievable goals. I have the slimmest of hope with him in office. The current administration believes in Debanking, constricting free speech, withholding information, lies and subterfuge, open borders and fundamentally failing the citizens.

We are about to enter some very dark and dangerous times. Being helpful to your neighbors, agreeing to disagree yet remain friends, and sharing knowledge is going to be paramount to your survival. Yes canned foods, guns, knowing how to repair machines clothing, or knit some socks will be a critical. I see first hand and have experienced when things go to hell, the breakdown of family and structures that support us and help us get back on our feet. You never truly recover, fear, hunger, violence lays in wait for the next body blow.

Thank you for having the courage to share your views. I couldn't disagree with you more, but that's the nature of democracy, isn't it? We each have the responsibility to make a choice and to express that choice through the ballot box.

I don't see this Substack as a place to argue politics, but I did feel it was important to state where I stand. I respect your right to make an opposing choice. And I hope you still feel welcome here.

Thank you! If I was still living on the Eastcoast I would invite you over for Maryland Sheep and Wool. We would have a true Maryland meal, crab cakes, Utz potato chips, Cole slaw and Berger cookies for dessert! Alas, now in Texas and the yarn stores are at least an hour away…
