We subscribed to the very same knitting magazines! I first met you, when Benjamin sat me next to you at the head table at the last Stitches South banquet, but have admired your patterns for many years. I still check the periodical section for knitting magazines each time I go shopping, but quilting has taken over. Are there ANY good knitting periodicals remaining in print?
Keep your eye out for Farm & Fiber Knits. Their first print issue came out last Fall, and the second print issue is in the works, scheduled to be released in Fall 2025. It is published by a talented team, most of whom worked at Interweave back in the day, and has beautiful photography, interesting and challenging patterns, and excellent technical articles. https://farmfiberknits.com
I’m just at the point in knitting where I’m beginning to be able to see garment construction from reading a pattern. When I saw this knitting newspaper, my first question was whether it’s edited by humans. Thanks for mentioning an alternative in the comments! That’s the one I’ll check out instead.
Thanks for the info on Knitting Nation; I was on the verge of subscribing this morning. Based on your honest thoughts, it's clear that although this might be a fun glance-through, it's not the publication for me.
I think Beryl can handle having the same name as a tumor😂. Though from your description of the plot, it sounds like both Beryls are a source of wisdom—of one sort or another.
Thanks for the review of Knit Nation. Fingers crossed they learn and improve. Perhaps one of those moments of “better done than perfect” and they’ll improve. Credit (and paying for) this work of ours really is a thing! So glad you’re noticing and pointing it out.
Thanks for the info on Knit Nation and Crochet Nation. I hope they have good success.
I just finished listening to Briar Club. I am SOOOOOOOO glad that I had four free hours at the end of the book as it was compelling! Compelling me to NOT quit. Thus, I got a wall hanging bound off and more rows on a hat :-). I will be recommending this to my book group next year. Her depiction of the lives of these women during the early 50's was just excellent. THanks for the tip. And... as scheduling would have it, Orbital arrived in my Libby inbasket just as I finished.
Hope it's a lovely spring day there; it certainly is here! Thank you for your writings and insight; I look forward to your Thursday notes :-)
Apparently you missed the pattern credits to your friend Krista Ann. They were on page 18. As a long time (50+) years, I heartily enjoyed Knit Nation. I do think that the size inclusiveness and pattern authors could have been better, but hey, it’s the first newspaper (knit paper?).. personally, I think you were a little harsher than necessary, and since you missed the mention that your friend wrote several of the patterns-how well did you actually read it?
Thanks for your feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed Knit Nation. I'm sure others will as well. I did see the mention in the article about Krista Ann that "many of the gorgeous designs featured in Knit Nation this month are her creations", but that's not the same as a "designed by". And it doesn't tell us where the other designs came from.
Thanks for the review of Knit Nation. I’ve spent many, many years in print and digital media, and I find some of these rookie mistakes mystifying. Not crediting contributors makes this a hard pass for me. Maybe they’ll improve?

Thank you for the run down on the new magazine. Think I'll hold off until I hear that it improves.

You're welcome.

Please give your Beryl a scratch behind the ears from me.

I'm so pleased you enjoyed Briar Club. I felt the same way. And you're in for a completely different sort of treat with Orbital.
Thanks for your kind words.

I have my fingers crossed. When we know better, we do better, right?
Thankyou for this review.
